Subdued Wall Street futures as US-China trade talks, positive for improving ties, slightly mixed.

U.S. stock index futures were quiet as trade talks between the U.S. and China continued. White House adviser Kevin Hassett mentioned a possible agreement to lift export controls on some semiconductors in exchange for China speeding up rare earth deliveries. Dow E-minis were down slightly, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 E-minis were up.

Investors are hopeful for improved ties following a preliminary deal, but Washington accused Beijing of blocking critical exports. A positive starting point was noted as the U.S. seeks the restoration of rare earth mineral exports from China. U.S. equities rallied in May, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq seeing their biggest monthly gains since November 2023.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq remain slightly below their all-time highs. Investors are looking for clues on the Federal Reserve’s rate trajectory from U.S. consumer prices data. Traders anticipate at least two 25-basis point cuts by year-end, with a 63% chance of the first cut in September. Shares of vaccine makers dipped in premarket trading after Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ousted all 17 members of a CDC vaccine panel.
