Walmart to expand drone deliveries to three more states

From CNBC: 2025-06-05 17:59:00

Walmart is expanding drone deliveries to 100 stores in Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa within the year, bringing the total to five states. Customers can request deliveries via the Wing app, with a six-mile range from stores. The company has made over 150,000 drone deliveries since 2021.

Walmart aims to compete with Amazon by offering speedy deliveries through drones, with orders typically consisting of urgent items like groceries or medication. The service delivers items like eggs, ice cream, and pet food in under 30 minutes. Over 50% of Walmart’s 150,000+ items can be delivered by drones.

Despite previous attempts to expand drone deliveries, Walmart’s rollout has faced challenges. Amazon also faces slow progress with its Prime Air drone service, temporarily pausing it earlier this year. Walmart has tested deliveries in Texas and Arkansas and has partnerships with drone operators like Wing and Zipline.

Walmart’s Chief Operating Officer, Kieran Shanahan, emphasizes the importance of offering flexibility and convenience to customers through drones and other delivery methods. The company is exploring new technologies and capabilities for future delivery services. Customers can currently order free drone deliveries through the Wing app or pay for them through the Walmart app.
