Famed investor Warren Buffett is donating $6 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway stock to five foundations, bringing his total donations to roughly $60 billion since 2006. The shares will be delivered on Monday, with the largest tranche going to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust.
Buffett’s donation includes nearly 12.4 million Class B shares, with each share valued at $485.68. The stock has climbed 19.1% over the last year, outperforming the broader U.S. stock market. Buffett plans to cut off donations to the Gates Foundation after his death, leaving the rest of his fortune to his children to distribute.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust will receive 9.4 million shares, while other foundations like the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation and Sherwood Foundation will also benefit. Buffett’s conservative investment approach and bargain-hunting style have contributed to his fortune of about $145 billion, almost entirely in Berkshire Hathaway stock.
Buffett’s will states that almost 99½% of his estate will be used for philanthropic purposes. He attributes his wealth to simple and sound decisions, the American economy’s tailwind, and the compounding effects of his investments. Berkshire Hathaway owns Geico, Dairy Queen, and other businesses, making his stock donations significant contributions to charitable causes.
