Alphabet’s Waymo to resume autonomous vehicle testing in New York City next month, applying for permit to operate with safety specialists at the wheel. The company aims to offer fully autonomous rides in the future, testing its technology in NYC’s complex urban environment with dense traffic and various road users.
Waymo expands national presence, already operating in San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Austin. Recently approved to broaden service in San Francisco Peninsula and Silicon Valley, planning to increase fleet from 1,500 to 2,500 vehicles through partnerships with automakers like Toyota and Zeekr.
Competition in autonomous vehicle sector heats up as Tesla prepares for robotaxi trials in Austin and other players like Zoox, Pony.ai, and WeRide race to keep up. Waymo leads with over 250,000 autonomous rides weekly, aiming to solidify its position as leader in autonomous mobility through NYC testing.
By tackling New York City’s challenging streets, Waymo aims to demonstrate readiness for urban driving complexities and reinforce its position as the frontrunner in autonomous mobility. Tesla, Zoox, Pony.ai, and WeRide are among competitors in the autonomous vehicle sector, but Waymo leads in scale and ridership.
