WBD split throws future of TNT Sports into question

From CNBC: 2025-06-09 14:57:00

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is ending the company’s relationship with U.S. sports. The company will split into Streaming and Studios, and Global Networks. Zaslav will lead Streaming and Studios, while CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels will head Global Networks. The future of TNT Sports, currently on HBO Max, is uncertain.

Zaslav stated that U.S. sports have not been a major driver for HBO Max sign-ups. Wiedenfels will decide where to license TNT Sports programming in the future. He could potentially merge TNT Sports with Comcast spinout Versant, led by CEO Mark Lazarus. The split is expected to occur by mid-2026.

Wiedenfels will have to consider tax implications if he opts for consolidation post-separation. The split is expected to be tax-free, but transactions could begin immediately after the separation. Versant did not comment on a potential acquisition of TNT Sports. Comcast is the parent company of CNBC, and Versant will become the parent company of CNBC after the spinout.
