Australia’s SDA secures A$5.5m in backpay for over 500 regional supermarket workers in South Australia, following a legal battle with Eudunda Farmers. Most underpaid workers were from Foodland chain. Eudunda Farmers engaged in various underpayment practices, leading to an average backpay of close to A$11,000 per worker.

One employee to receive over A$145,000 in backpay, with 16 others getting more than A$50,000 each. Eudunda Farmers operates 20 supermarkets in regional South Australia. SDA uncovered underpayments in 2020, leading to a federal court claim in 2021 that quintupled in magnitude.

SDA celebrates victory in securing backpay for supermarket workers, emphasizing the power of collective action. SDA also aims to empower McDonald’s employees nationwide with collective bargaining rights for better wages and conditions. Fair Work Commission approved SDA’s supported bargaining application for 5,000 McDonald’s workers in South Australia.
