AFC Energy and Industrial Chemicals Group form JV to produce hydrogen from ammonia

AFC Energy plc and Industrial Chemicals Group Limited have agreed to form a joint venture to produce hydrogen from ammonia. The 50:50 partnership will utilize AFC Energy’s proprietary technology to manufacture hydrogen at a disruptive price point in the UK, aiming for commercial viability without government subsidies. Initial revenues are expected in early 2026, with production capacity reaching up to 400 kilograms of hydrogen per day. The joint venture will leverage ICL’s expertise in ammonia procurement and logistics, along with AFC Energy’s ammonia cracking technology. Capacity expansion will be achieved through portable ammonia crackers capable of generating up to 500 kilograms of hydrogen per day.
