Coca-Cola plans to introduce a cane sugar version of its namesake soda in the U.S. this fall, following the popularity of “Mexican Coke” among consumers. President Trump’s interest in “REAL Cane Sugar” prompted the move, although research does not indicate cane sugar is healthier than high-fructose corn syrup. Coke CEO James Quincey announced the product during the company’s earnings call.

Coke already sweetens some U.S. products with cane sugar, such as lemonade and teas, but long-standing tariffs on imported sugar make it a more expensive option. Despite this, consumers have responded positively to Coke’s efforts to reduce sugar in its portfolio, with Coca-Cola Zero Sugar showing strong growth. PepsiCo is also adding cane sugar to its cola products, launching Pepsi Prebiotic Cola with fiber and cane sugar.
