EU countries are urging the European Commission to keep their strategies to stop using Russian oil and gas by 2027 confidential. The plans will detail measures for transitioning to alternative energy sources and reducing dependency on Russian imports, with concerns over market impacts and sensitive information.

Denmark, currently holding the EU presidency, is leading negotiations to keep these transition plans under “professional secrecy” to prevent disclosure without member states’ consent. Plans are expected to address reducing demand, increasing renewable energy, securing alternative supplies, and overcoming diversification obstacles.

Slovakia and Hungary, who rely on Russian gas, have resisted the ban, jeopardizing EU sanctions. Slovakia seeks agreements with the EU on assurances against gas supply repercussions and compensation for halting Russian imports to support the proposed ban on Russian energy imports by 2028.

The proposal to phase out Russian energy imports by 2028 can proceed with a majority vote, but sanctions require unanimous agreement. Slovakia’s stance on energy concerns directly affects the approval of the EC’s latest sanctions proposal targeting Russia’s energy revenues and military industry.
