European stocks closed lower on Wednesday as investors remained cautious, digesting economic data and U.S. debt ceiling negotiations. The pan European Stoxx 600 ended 0.15% down, with the UK’s FTSE 100 down 0.36% and France’s CAC 40 down 0.09%. In the UK market, British Land Company ended 5.6% lower, while Melrose Industries and Carnival gained 2 to 4.5%. Eurozone inflation rose as estimated in April, with the HICP posting an annual growth of 7%. France’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.1% in the first quarter. New car registrations in Europe saw a double-digit growth in April, slowing from March’s pace.
