Jack Dorsey launches decentralized Bluetooth mesh network messaging service Bitchat, focusing on privacy and security.

Jack Dorsey launches beta version of decentralized peer-to-peer messaging service called Bitchat, running over Bluetooth. The system is fully decentralized with no central servers or infrastructure dependencies, offering ephemeral, encrypted communication without relying on internet infrastructure. Plans include messaging over WiFi to increase bandwidth for large messages.

Bitchat enables automatic multi-hop message relaying through mesh networking, with room-based chat options and a store-and-forward system to cache messages for offline peers. Messages are encrypted based on privacy settings, with large messages fragmented into smaller chunks. Use cases include scenarios where internet infrastructure is unavailable or untrusted.

Jack Dorsey’s Bitchat aims to provide secure, private messaging without centralized infrastructure, combining Bluetooth mesh networking, end-to-end encryption, and privacy-preserving protocols. The system is designed for use in situations like conferences, protests, or disaster areas where internet connectivity may be unreliable. Dorsey previously founded decentralized social messaging platform Bluesky in 2019.
