Keolis Expands Presence in Australia Through Full Ownership Acquisition
Keolis is set to acquire Downer’s stake in the Keolis Downer joint venture in Australia, making it the sole owner by the end of 2025. This move will enhance Keolis’ role as a trusted transportation partner by providing eco-friendly solutions and expanding its presence in various transport markets, including bus, tram, and rail.
The acquisition also positions Keolis to potentially form a strong consortium for the upcoming Melbourne trains tender. Keolis Group chairwoman Marie-Ange Debon emphasized the strategic importance of this decision, highlighting the company’s commitment to developing efficient transport solutions in Australia.
With over 3,500 employees, Keolis has been active in Australia for 15 years, operating tram networks, buses, ferry shuttles, and on-demand transport in multiple cities. The company manages key transportation systems, including the G:link tram on the Gold Coast and the Newcastle tram, while also overseeing major bus networks in various cities.
In a separate project, Keolis and the MBTA are seeking bids for seven battery-electric multiple unit trainsets for the Fairmount Line in the US. This initiative, part of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey’s plan, aims to reduce emissions and enhance safety, reliability, and service frequency, with a launch planned for 2028.
