Natural gas has become essential in modern energy systems, fueling power plants, heating homes, and connecting continents through LNG. The 2025 Statistical Review of World Energy highlights its importance despite pressure to decarbonize. Global natural gas production hit a record 398.0 Bcf/d in 2024, with the US leading at 25%. Russia, the former top producer, faced challenges in exports to Europe. Other key producers include Iran, Qatar, China, Australia, and Africa.

Global natural gas consumption reached an all-time high of 398 Bcf/d in 2024, with the US, Russia, and China leading demand. Asia drives much of the growth, with countries like Iran, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Germany, and India also significant consumers. Non-OECD nations account for 74% of the demand growth over the past decade.

LNG exports have tripled since 2010, totaling nearly 546 billion cubic meters in 2024. The US is now the top exporter at 11 Bcf/d, followed by Qatar and Australia. Russia, Nigeria, Algeria, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea are also notable exporters. Europe remains a consumer rather than a supplier of LNG.

Despite challenges like price volatility and regulatory pressure, natural gas remains crucial for global energy stability. Its role as a bridge fuel to replace coal and support renewables has solidified. The past decade has shown natural gas’s adaptability and importance in the energy landscape, with a shift towards a more diverse LNG trade market.
