U.S. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. met with officials ahead of the “Make America Healthy Again” agenda in Washington, D.C. The Department of Health and Human Services announced the removal of thimerosal from all flu shots in the U.S., despite no evidence of harm. This decision eliminates a vaccine option and is a win for the anti-vaccine movement.

Kennedy Jr. adopted a recommendation to remove thimerosal from flu shots from the ACIP after restacking the panel with new members, including anti-vaccine activists. This affects 4% to 5% of the U.S. flu vaccine supply, including some shots from Sanofi and CSL Seqirus. Vaccine manufacturers have the capacity to replace multi-dose vials containing mercury.

The move could lead to fewer people receiving flu shots, reinforcing fears of thimerosal causing developmental disabilities. Kennedy has long been skeptical of vaccines, calling for the removal of thimerosal in the past. More than 40 studies have found no link between thimerosal and developmental delays, despite widespread use in medicines and vaccines. Other recommendations from the panel’s meeting are still under review.
