Co-founder of Tornado Cash faces trial for money laundering, unclear if he will testify.
Roman Storm, co-founder of Tornado Cash, is set to stand trial in the US on charges of money laundering and operating an unlicensed money transmitter. He may testify in his defense, facing allegations of profiting from illicit funds.
US authorities indicted Storm in 2023 for facilitating money laundering with crypto stolen by North Korea-based hackers. Co-founder Roman Semenov remains at large, while developer Alexey Pertsev was sentenced to over five years for money laundering in the Netherlands.
Storm has received support from the crypto community, with donations totaling over $750,000 towards his legal fund. Ethereum Foundation, Vitalik Buterin, and others have backed him, denouncing his indictment as an attack on developers’ privacy.
Facing mental strain from the case, Storm plans to take time to recover after trial. His trial is set to start on July 14 in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
