US DOI Grants New Coal Mining Permit, Boosting Energy Production

The US Department of the Interior has approved Hurricane Creek Mining to begin coal mining on Bryson Mountain in Tennessee, allowing up to 1.8 million tonnes of coal production by 2034. The project aims to support industries like steelmaking and power generation, utilizing surface mining techniques across 635 acres.

The permit was expedited through an environmental review process to accelerate energy project evaluations under President Trump’s national energy emergency declaration. This move aligns with Executive Order 14261, promoting reliable coal production and energy resource expansion. Legislative support from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act includes reduced royalty rates for federal coal mining.

Additionally, the DOI has approved an expansion of the Bull Mountains coal mine in Montana, potentially extending its lifespan by nine years. Signal Peak Energy is authorized to extract 22.8mt of federal coal and 34.5mt of non-federal coal. This development reflects the government’s commitment to supporting the coal sector and expanding energy resources.
