Vitalik proposes gas cap on Ethereum to enhance security and reduce transaction risks
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and researcher Toni Wahrstätter propose EIP-7983 to cap transaction gas usage at 16.77 million to enhance network security and stability, reduce DoS attack risks, and make transaction costs more predictable.
The gas cap aims to improve compatibility with zkVMs, reject transactions exceeding the limit, balance complexity and performance, and accommodate DeFi use cases without unnecessary risks. Most existing transactions fall below the cap, minimizing impact on users and developers.
Buterin advocates simplifying Ethereum’s base protocol for efficiency, security, and accessibility, inspired by Bitcoin’s minimalist approach. He recently introduced a new digital identity system called “pluralistic identity” to protect privacy and enable fair digital participation.
