BNSF Railway’s pre-tax earnings rose 11.5% in Q2 to $2 billion and 8.6% in the first half to $3.8 billion compared to 2024. Operating revenues increased slightly to $5.73 billion in Q2 and $11.4 billion in the first six months, with lower operating costs offsetting weaker revenue per car.

Net earnings for BNSF climbed to $1.5 billion in the quarter and $2.7 billion in the first half of the year. Freight volumes increased by 1.4% in Q2 and 2.7% in the first half, while average revenue per car declined due to lower fuel surcharge revenue and an unfavorable business mix.

Coal volumes for BNSF improved by 13.7% in the quarter and 7.3% in the first half, while consumer products saw a 0.6% and 4.5% increase. Agricultural and energy carloads also saw improvements, with industrial product shipments falling slightly. The company did not comment on acquisition rumors involving Norfolk Southern or CSX.
