The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expects staff to return to offices by Sept. 15 after a deadly attack on the agency’s headquarters in Atlanta. Employees impacted by the shooting will be provided alternative workspaces. Repair progress has been made at the CDC Roybal Campus. The agency is addressing staff concerns and ensuring a safe environment for the transition back to in-office work.

The shooting at the CDC didn’t result in injuries but affected a workforce already facing changes under HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., including staff cuts and controversy over immunization policies. President Donald Trump fired CDC Director Susan Monarez and four other top officials resigned. The gunman, Patrick Joseph White, blamed the Covid-19 vaccine for his actions.

Authorities recovered five guns and over 500 shell casings from the scene of the CDC headquarters shooting by Patrick Joseph White. The attacker fatally shot a police officer and then killed himself. Former CDC Director Susan Monarez linked misinformation to the shooting and vowed to restore trust in public health through science and evidence.
