The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has halted an investigation into buy now, pay later company Credova Financial, connected to Donald Trump Jr., citing biased and politically motivated actions. Credova, linked to Trump Jr.’s GrabAGun firearms marketplace, faced consumer complaints and settlements over state violations. The closure of the investigation aligns with the CFPB’s shift under Trump’s second term.

In 2021, Credova settled with the Massachusetts attorney general’s office, waiving balances over $126,000 for illegally leasing dogs. In January 2024, Credova and the California Department of Financial Protection reached a consent order, paying a $50,000 penalty for not disclosing third-party fees. Over 50 consumer complaints have been filed against Credova to the CFPB, mainly regarding debt collection practices.

Donald Trump Jr.’s involvement with Credova includes joining the board of directors for parent company PSQ Holdings in December 2024. Trump Jr., who owns 697,403 shares in Public Square, worth around $1.1 million, denies involvement in the case. Critics see the CFPB’s action as emblematic of corruption, benefiting allies and harming enemies in the administration.
