Andrew Ferguson, head of the FTC, voiced concerns that Gmail may be filtering out Republican fundraising emails as spam, but not doing the same for Democratic ones. He warned Alphabet of potential FTC action if this continues.

A Google spokesperson responded, stating that Gmail’s spam filters treat all senders equally based on objective signals, regardless of political ideology. They will review Ferguson’s letter and engage constructively.

Conservatives have complained of censorship by digital platforms, including Gmail. In 2023, the FEC dismissed a Republican complaint over Gmail’s filters, and a federal court rejected an RNC lawsuit with similar claims. The RNC is now reviving that lawsuit.

A federal judge recently blocked an FTC investigation into Media Matters, a left-leaning group, over its research on antisemitic content on X, calling the investigation retaliatory.
