Taiwan-based Sino-American Silicon Products announced that its subsidiary GlobalWafers received $200 million from the U.S. CHIPS Act in June, half of last year’s grant. The funding is part of a $406 million award for expanding U.S. silicon wafer production in Texas and Missouri. President Trump’s administration had previously raised concerns about the awards.

GlobalWafers stated that the grant would be disbursed in stages upon reaching milestones. The company opened a $3.5 billion wafer plant in Texas in May. In collaboration with Apple’s $100 billion U.S. investment, GlobalWafers will supply 300mm silicon wafers from its Texas facility to the tech giant.

Sino-American Silicon Products and GlobalWafers chairwoman Doris Hsu expressed on an earnings call that the partnership with Apple will help meet U.S. domestic market demand. Hsu mentioned that if demand grows, they may accelerate the next phase of expansion to keep up with production needs.
