NVIDIA and ModDB RTX Remix Mod Contest winners were announced at Gamescom, with Merry Pencil Studios’ Painkiller RTX Remix taking top honors for rebuilding over 35 levels of the shooter using AI-assisted workflows and handcrafted artistry. AI tools like PBRFusion helped upscale textures and generate high-quality materials for a more immersive experience. NVIDIA RTX GPUs accelerated the workflow, reducing remastering time from years to months.
UnrealRTX modder mstewart401 showcased the power of AI in modding by rebuilding almost every texture across 14 levels of the classic game, creating glowing crystals, shimmering landscapes, and detailed environments. The project leaned heavily on AI for texture work, allowing for more creative polishing and a professional-quality overhaul in a fraction of the time.
Alessandro893’s Need for Speed: Underground RTX Remix used a blend of AI and 3D artistry to remaster every race course in the game, generating over 500 new textures and building high-poly car and environment models for smoother, lifelike detail. With RTX GPUs driving the process, the team reimagined racing environments with faster iteration and higher fidelity.
Skurtyyskirts’ Portal 2 RTX Remix project showcased an innovative AI-powered workflow using a custom plug-in to bridge Substance Painter directly to RTX Remix. By combining AI upscalers with manual artistry, the project delivered sharper, more atmospheric game environments with realistic reflections and detailed materials. The new pipeline opens the door for other modders to explore AI-powered workflows.
