Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, plans to take legal action against Apple, accusing the tech giant of antitrust violations in managing App Store rankings. Musk alleges that Apple’s practices hinder other AI companies from reaching the top spot. Musk’s claims lack supporting evidence, and no responses have been provided by Apple, OpenAI, or xAI.
Currently, ChatGPT holds the top position in the “Top Free Apps” category on the App Store for iPhones in the US. xAI’s Grok ranks fifth, while Google’s Gemini chatbot is positioned at 57th. ChatGPT also leads the rankings on the Google Play Store, according to Sensor Tower data.
Apple has a partnership with OpenAI that integrates ChatGPT into its devices. Musk previously questioned Apple’s app placement decisions, highlighting the rankings of xAI’s apps. Musk’s statements follow increased scrutiny on Apple’s control over the App Store from regulators and competitors.
In April 2025, a US judge found Apple in breach of a court order for increased App Store competition, potentially leading to a criminal contempt investigation. The EU antitrust authority imposed a €500m ($587m) fine on Apple for hindering app developers from directing users to cheaper options outside the App Store, violating the Digital Markets Act.
