Irish supermarkets’ profit margins are not “notably high,” according to the CCPC. Tesco Ireland’s operating profit margin dropped to 3.7% in 2024. Musgrave’s margin decreased to 2.4%, while Aldi’s dropped to 0.8%. The CCPC’s analysis shows Irish supermarkets’ margins are in line with the UK and Europe.

The CCPC review found no evidence of competition issues in the Irish grocery retail sector. Since 2005, enhanced competition has benefited consumers. Food price hikes in Ireland have been below the European average, with the lowest food inflation in the EU. Irish consumers faced a 27% price surge by June 2025.

Despite rising costs, Irish retailers are absorbing some pressures rather than passing them to consumers. The CCPC sees no need for an in-depth study but will continue to monitor the grocery retail sector closely. Retail Insight Network originally reported the findings.
