Vienna Insurance Group (VIG) has successfully won an auction to acquire an 80% stake in Moldovan non-life insurer Moldasig. This move will make VIG a leading player in the Moldovan insurance market, holding around 30% market share. The deal, initiated in May 2025, is expected to be finalized pending standard closing conditions and approval from the Moldovan competition authority. Moldasig, headquartered in Chișinău, offers a wide range of non-life insurance products for individuals and businesses. Since entering the Moldovan market in 2014, VIG has built a customer base exceeding 120,000. VIG reported a pre-tax profit of €261.1m ($303.39m) for the first quarter of 2025, marking a 7.5% increase from the previous year. The insurer’s gross written premiums rose by 8.3% year-on-year to €4.6bn, driven by operations in Poland and the extended central and eastern Europe region, especially Romania, Bulgaria, and Slovakia.
