President Donald Trump has fired Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Susan Monarez after she refused to resign. Lawyers for Monarez stated that they are not aware of any new developments and that receiving an email from HR saying “you’re fired” is insufficient as a matter of law. Monarez was confirmed by the Senate as the first CDC director under a new law. At least four other top health officials announced their resignation shortly after Monarez’s departure. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Monarez were reportedly at odds over vaccine policy, with Kennedy being a vaccine skeptic. Kennedy has expressed ambitions for the CDC but acknowledged that the agency has problems and may need new leadership. The CDC is facing challenges in the wake of a recent shooting at its Atlanta headquarters, which resulted in a police officer’s death.
