Boeing is hiring new workers to replace striking employees in its defense unit as the strike enters a second month without a new contract agreement. The 3,200 workers, represented by International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 837, went on strike on August 4 after rejecting Boeing’s contract offer, which included a 20% general wage increase, a $5,000 ratification bonus, and other improvements. Boeing is taking the next step in their contingency plan by hiring permanent replacement workers for manufacturing roles to ensure proper staffing to support customers. The company did not disclose the number of workers being hired. VP Dan Gillian expressed frustration with the union’s demands, stating they are further apart in negotiations.
