Eli Lilly’s experimental pill, orforglipron, outperformed Novo Nordisk’s oral drug in a study on Type 2 diabetes patients. Orforglipron showed superior results in lowering blood sugar levels and weight loss compared to Novo Nordisk’s pill. Eli Lilly plans to apply for approval for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes in 2026 and hopes to launch globally next year.
The study compared orforglipron to Novo Nordisk’s oral semaglutide, with orforglipron showing better results in lowering blood sugar levels and weight loss. Eli Lilly’s pill is not a peptide medication like Novo Nordisk’s, making it easier to absorb and not requiring dietary restrictions. The trial showed consistent safety and tolerability for orforglipron compared to previous studies.
Eli Lilly’s ACHIEVE-3 trial included nearly 1,700 adults with Type 2 diabetes not well managed on Metformin. The study found that the highest dose of orforglipron helped lower blood sugar levels and promote weight loss in patients, with fewer discontinuations due to side effects compared to Novo Nordisk’s drug. The results suggest a promising future for Eli Lilly’s pill in treating diabetes and obesity.
