Eli Lilly plans to build a $6.5bn API facility in Texas, following its $27bn US manufacturing expansion. The site will produce orforglipron, a GLP-1RA drug for obesity, with projected global sales of over $14bn by 2031. The facility in Houston will create over 600 jobs and incorporate digital technology.

The Texas site is part of Lilly’s strategy to onshore production amid industry pressure. The company previously announced a $5bn manufacturing facility in Virginia for bioconjugate and mAb products. Both sites aim to boost domestic production of cancer treatments, aligning with President Trump’s call for increased US manufacturing.

Eli Lilly’s investment in US manufacturing aligns with Trump’s push for onshoring. Other pharma giants like AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, GSK, and Roche have also made multibillion-dollar commitments to bolster production in the US. However, skepticism remains about the effectiveness of this trend, with mixed reception to FDA schemes for boosting US drug manufacturing.
