US buyers have one last weekend to snag the federal electric vehicle tax credit, with a Sept. 30 deadline. Automakers like GM, Ford, Tesla, and Rivian are pushing for electric sales. However, many Americans don’t fully understand how the tax credit works, impacting their decision to go electric.

To qualify for the tax credit, EVs must be assembled in North America, have non-FEOC battery materials, and meet price restrictions. Buyer income limits also apply. Leasing EVs falls under a commercial credit, allowing more flexibility for automakers and taxpayers.

Dealers may offer additional incentives to stack with the federal tax credit, like state rebates. New York offers a $2,000 Drive Clean Rebate, and California provides up to $7,000 in rebates. Time is running out to capitalize on these savings, so act fast before the deadline hits.
