Universal and Dreamworks Animation bring “Gabby’s Dollhouse” from streaming to the big screen in a full-length feature film starring Laila Lockhart Kraner as Gabby. The movie aims to expand the brand’s world and engage existing fans while attracting new audiences. It follows the success of other kid’s TV shows transitioning to theaters.

“Gabby’s Dollhouse” has been a hit on Netflix, with 11 seasons and a 12th season on the way. The show’s popularity has led to a theatrical release to increase brand awareness and offer a unique experience for young viewers. The film combines animation and live-action elements on a larger scale.

The movie’s production budget of $30 million makes it a cost-effective way for Universal and DreamWorks Animation to extend the franchise’s reach globally. It follows the success of other budget-friendly kids’ films like “Paw Patrol,” which generated substantial revenues. The goal is to engage audiences across various platforms, from toys to live events.

DreamWorks Animation president Margie Cohn emphasizes creating an interconnected ecosystem around “Gabby’s Dollhouse,” including toys, books, and merchandise. The brand partnership with Spin Master has led to a line of products like playsets, plush toys, and games. The strategy aims to let kids play, iterate, and experience the characters and ideas in their own way. Spin Master has sold four million dollhouses tied to the show “Gabby’s Dollhouse.” DreamWorks Animation’s partnership with Spin Master helped the show’s success through YouTube shorts, grassroots marketing, and a live show presented by Walmart. The series has been a top preschool toy property for five of the last eight quarters and a top 10 property for 10 straight quarters.

In addition to toys, “Gabby’s Dollhouse” has merchandise collections with Walmart, Target, and Amazon, including apparel, home goods, games, and toothbrushes. The franchise has expanded to Universal’s theme parks with character meet-and-greets and retail areas. “Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie” sets up a bigger future for Gabby and a potential spin-off series.

Audiences can expect themed popcorn buckets, drink tumblers, and specialty items as the film heads to theaters. Universal plans to continue expanding the franchise with new releases and merchandise. Comcast, the parent company of Fandango and NBCUniversal, is planning a spinoff of Versant, making it the new parent company of Fandango and CNBC.
