Chipmaker Nvidia plans to invest $100 billion in OpenAI, adding 10 gigawatts of AI data centers for ChatGPT. The first gigawatt of Nvidia systems will be deployed in the second half of 2026. Collaborators like Microsoft and Oracle pledged $100 billion for OpenAI data centers in January.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that the new data centers by Nvidia are crucial for delivering services and improving models. Both Nvidia and Microsoft are passive investors, with OpenAI’s nonprofit board in control. OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit in 2015, with its nonprofit board continuing to control the for-profit subsidiary.
Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it has betrayed its promise to develop AI for humanity. Attorneys general of California and Delaware raised concerns about the safety of ChatGPT, citing dangerous interactions leading to a young Californian’s suicide. The parents of the deceased teenager have sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman.
