Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern have launched a new domestic intermodal service, using UP’s network to connect customers in the west and south through NS’s Louisville facilities. The joint service will offer truck-competitive transit times across various sectors, with destinations including Los Angeles, Seattle, and Houston.
The bi-directional service will interchange in Kansas City at UP’s new terminal, benefiting from innovative interline service products developed by both railroads. CSX in Jacksonville has also announced interline agreements, following UP’s acquisition agreement with NS to create a transcontinental railroad.
UP’s enhancements to the Kansas City Intermodal Terminal enable 25% faster container movement, saving up to 25 hours of transit time to and from Southern California. With $1.4 billion spent on upgrades since 2021, UP aims to compete with trucks and alleviate highway congestion.
Norfolk Southern is expanding its Louisville hub to accommodate domestic services, reflecting a customer-centric approach and strategic infrastructure investments. The railroads aim to provide reliable freight solutions and ease congestion on the nation’s highways, emphasizing the importance of intermodal services in the transportation industry.
