The trucking and logistics sector has faced economic challenges, with thousands of companies shutting down permanently. The number of motor carriers dropped by 3.7% in 2024, with 339,220 carriers operating. Despite this, newly registered carriers rose by 13% in 2024. Major trucking companies have shut down unprofitable facilities.

The Great Freight Recession continues, as trucking companies file for bankruptcy. At least 20 companies filed for bankruptcy in the second quarter of 2025, with more expected in the third quarter. J.B. Hunt Transport Inc. and Epic Lightning Fast Service LLC are among those closing facilities and laying off workers.

Epic Lightning Fast Service LLC, a San Diego-based trucking company, will permanently shut down operations on Oct. 31, laying off all 116 workers. The company filed a WARN notice on Sept. 1, listing the positions affected. Employees will not have bumping rights, and the company has not disclosed future plans or bankruptcy protection.
