Chinese battery industry utilization rates dropped significantly last year, prompting manufacturers to seek overseas markets. China Energy Storage Alliance reported a 220% surge in overseas orders in the first half of this year, with only 3% coming from the U.S. due to tariffs. Meanwhile, U.S. battery storage capacity has seen a massive increase, with utility-scale battery capacity now exceeding solar and wind capacity in certain markets. Falling battery prices have driven this growth, making utility-scale solar farms paired with batteries competitive with natural gas and coal-fired plants. Renewables are now the most competitive form of power generation in the U.S. on an unsubsidized basis.
