CVS has acquired customer prescription files from closed Rite Aid drugstores and now operates 63 of the defunct chain’s locations in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. The company has transferred files from 626 pharmacies in 15 states to nearby CVS locations. The cost of this acquisition has not been disclosed.

Rite Aid recently announced bankruptcy protection and store closures. Once running over 4,000 stores, Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy in 2023 due to debt and losses. Despite emerging from Chapter 11 in 2024 as a private company, the chain struggled to maintain business, now operating around 1,200 stores.

Major pharmacy chains like Walgreens are facing challenges with increased theft, online shopping competition, and declining foot traffic. Walgreens, with significantly more stores than Rite Aid, agreed to be acquired by private equity firm Sycamore Partners in March. CVS Health Corp, based in Rhode Island, operates thousands of drugstores, pharmacy benefits management, and Aetna health insurance covering 27 million individuals.
