The US FDA has approved Novo Nordisk’s Rybelsus as the only oral GLP-1 medication to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes at high risk. The SOUL trial results support semaglutide’s clinical profile. Rybelsus is now approved for both primary and secondary prevention of MACE. Initially approved in 2019 for improving glycemic control, Novo Nordisk has also submitted a supplemental application for a once-daily oral formulation of semaglutide for obesity treatment, with a decision expected later this year.
