General Motors plans to introduce new software initiatives in its vehicles, including Google’s Gemini AI assistant and a hands-free driver-assistance system by 2028. CEO Mary Barra showcased these advancements at the “GM Forward” event, aiming to transform cars into intelligent assistants. The company also announced a centralized computing platform and increased use of collaborative robots. GM aims to usher in a “new era of mobility” with these initiatives, building on previous revenue goals and growth initiatives. The company reported $2 billion in software services revenue in the third quarter of this year. The announcements come after GM’s standout third-quarter earnings and increased guidance, propelling its stock. The artificial intelligence system from Google will allow natural conversations with vehicles, while the driver-assistance system will feature hands-free, “eyes-off” driving technology starting with the Cadillac Escalade IQ EV in 2028. GM plans to update vehicles from the 2016 model year with AI tech next year, and develop its own AI technology in the future. The upgraded driver-assistance system will use lidar technology for better surroundings detection, with plans to expand to other models. GM will introduce its “Energy Home System” via leasing in 2026, offering bidirectional electric vehicle charging and stationary home batteries. GM Energy, launched in 2022, aims to compete with Tesla’s home energy systems and provide EV chargers and software for optimal charging and grid disruptions. Barra emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering for customers and building on its history with these new initiatives.
