GM is discontinuing production of the Chevy Brightdrop electric van due to slowing demand in the EV market. Hundreds of Brightdrop vans are stacking up in dealer lots. CEO Mary Barra cited challenges in the commercial electric van market and regulatory changes as contributing factors.
The disappearance of the federal EV tax credit under the Trump administration affected Brightdrop vans, which were eligible for a $7,500 rebate for commercial EVs. The van’s starting price of $74,000 was too high for most consumers, especially when compared to the rival Ford E-Transit van starting at $51,600.
GM launched Brightdrop vans in 2021 to capture the commercial EV market, offering fleet management software and partnering with companies like Walmart and FedEx. However, the van’s high price point, lack of tax credits, and rebates have deterred commercial customers from making purchases.
