AMIES Technology, a Chinese lithography equipment manufacturer, showcased chipmaking products at an industry event in Shenzhen. The company aims to reduce China’s reliance on ASML. It offers compound-semiconductor lithography machines, laser-annealing systems, and advanced inspection tools. AMIES was spun off from state-owned Shanghai Micro Electronics Equipment in February.

Advanced lithography remains a challenge for China’s chipmaking goals, as it lags behind global leaders. The US restricts China from acquiring ASML’s top DUV and EUV systems. AMIES focuses on commercializing lithography equipment swiftly. Its shareholder, Zhangjiang Group, once claimed SMEE developed a 28-nm lithography machine.

AMIES offers a flagship advanced packaging lithography machine with global market share. The company lists product lines for various semiconductor applications. In August, it shipped its 500th stepper lithography machine. AMIES received an award for its fan-out packaging lithography system.

AMIES has solid state support, with nearly 30 shareholders backing the company. It boasts a technical team of 600 people, with most holding advanced degrees. As part of China’s chip self-reliance strategy, players are developing DUV and EUV tools. SiCarrier and other firms are working on advanced-node lithography machines.

ASML reported total net sales of €7.5 billion in Q3, with China accounting for 42% of system orders. However, ASML anticipates a decline in demand from China due to US-China tensions and Beijing’s export controls on rare earth materials. China’s push for chip self-reliance is reshaping the global semiconductor supply chain.
