OpenAI has announced a partnership with AMD to use their chips in creating six gigawatts of AI infrastructure, potentially earning AMD “tens of billions of dollars.” The deal includes OpenAI purchasing 160 million AMD shares at a penny each, with the possibility of a 10 percent stake in AMD.
AMD will be a key strategic partner for OpenAI, providing Instinct GPUs for large-scale deployments of AI technology. The first gigawatt of Instinct MI450 GPUs is expected to be deployed in the second half of 2026. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, praised AMD’s high-performance chips for accelerating progress in AI development.
OpenAI’s collaborations extend beyond AMD, with partnerships also in place with Microsoft and NVIDIA. Microsoft has invested over $13 billion in OpenAI for a 49 percent share of profits. Meanwhile, NVIDIA has invested $5 billion in Intel to combine their strengths in AI and computing technologies, with plans for Intel to create NVIDIA-custom x86 CPUs for the market and AI infrastructure platforms.
