Eisai and Biogen’s LEQEMBI IQLIK recognized as one of TIME’s “Best Inventions of 2025” in Medical and Healthcare category. The at-home injection treatment for Alzheimer’s disease offers patients a convenient option for disease progression following initial treatment period. LEQEMBI approved in the U.S. in August 2025 and launched on October 6, providing potential benefits of shorter administration time and reduced healthcare resources. Eisai leads development globally with Biogen in co-commercialization. LEQEMBI is the first approved anti-amyloid treatment for AD shown to slow disease progression and cognitive decline in early stages. Safety information includes warnings related to amyloid-related imaging abnormalities. Contraindicated in patients with serious hypersensitivity to lecanemab-irmb or excipients. LEQEMBI, a medication for Alzheimer’s disease, can cause angioedema and anaphylaxis. It may also lead to amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), with symptomatic ARIA occurring in 3% of patients. Risk factors for ARIA and intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) include ApoE ε4 carrier status and radiographic findings of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). Patients with certain MRI findings suggestive of CAA may be at higher risk. Monitoring with MRI is recommended, with enhanced vigilance for ARIA during the first 14 weeks of treatment. Clinicians should exercise caution when considering concomitant antithrombotic or thrombolytic medication with LEQEMBI. LEQEMBI, a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, has been associated with hypersensitivity reactions, including angioedema, bronchospasm, and anaphylaxis. Infusion-related reactions were observed in 26% of patients receiving LEQEMBI compared to 7% with a placebo. Common adverse reactions included headache, rash, and nausea/vomiting. Careful clinical evaluation is recommended if ARIA is observed on MRI before continuing treatment. LEQEMBI, available in intravenous and subcutaneous forms, is a humanized monoclonal antibody targeting amyloid-beta. Approval in multiple countries was based on Phase 3 data showing significant cognitive and functional improvements compared to placebo in Alzheimer’s patients. A study showed a 37% benefit in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) who took lecanemab compared to a placebo, based on the Activities of Daily Living Scale for Mild Cognitive Impairment. The drug also showed a significant improvement in patients’ ability to function independently. The most common side effects were infusion reactions, cerebral hemorrhages, headaches, and falls. The subcutaneous dosing of lecanemab was found to be as effective as IV dosing with fewer systemic reactions. Ongoing clinical trials are exploring the use of lecanemab in preclinical AD and Dominantly Inherited AD. Eisai and Biogen have been collaborating on AD treatments since 2014, with both companies co-commercializing the product. Additionally, Eisai has a long-term collaboration with BioArctic for the development of AD treatments. Biogen, founded in 1978, is a leading biotechnology company focused on delivering innovative medicines to transform patients’ lives. Biogen takes bold risks for long-term growth, balancing return on investment. Important investor information is posted on their website. Follow Biogen on social media for updates. The news release contains forward-looking statements about clinical effects of lecanemab and potential benefits. Drug development involves high risk, with only a small number of programs resulting in commercialization. Results in early-stage trials may not be indicative of later-stage results. Forward-looking statements are subject to risks and uncertainties, with potential for actual results to differ. Investors are cautioned not to rely solely on forward-looking statements.
