Japanese investment holding company SoftBank has authorized a $22.5bn investment in OpenAI, bringing their total commitment to the AI company to $30bn as part of a $41bn financing round announced in April. SoftBank’s board approved the investment on the condition that OpenAI completes a corporate restructuring for a possible public listing. If the restructuring doesn’t occur, SoftBank’s investment could reduce to $20bn. The funding aims to support OpenAI’s operational growth and potential transition to public markets, reflecting increased investor focus on AI infrastructure and governance models. Additionally, SoftBank recently agreed to acquire ABB’s robotics division for $5.4bn, which generated $2.3bn in revenue in 2024.
