South Africans can now use cryptocurrency to pay at over 650,000 Scan to Pay-enabled merchants thanks to a partnership between QR payments provider Scan to Pay and Bitcoin payments company MoneyBadger. Users of major exchanges like Binance and Luno can pay with Bitcoin, stablecoins, and other crypto assets directly at checkout counters. They will receive settlement in rand, removing the need to convert funds back into fiat for everyday purchases. Merchants on the network do not need to take additional steps to accept crypto payments. MoneyBadger CEO Carel van Wyk noted that South Africans are transitioning from holding Bitcoin as an investment to using it for everyday spending, expanding the places where Bitcoin can be used significantly. Van Wyk emphasized the importance of spending Bitcoin to drive adoption and fulfill the original vision of Bitcoin as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system.
