The U.S. Department of Energy partners with Advanced Micro Devices in a $1 billion deal to create two new supercomputers named “Lux” and “Discovery.” These systems will utilize AMD’s next-generation AI chips to advance research in nuclear energy, cancer treatment, and national security. Lux, operational in six months, will triple current AI capacity, while Discovery is set to launch in 2029. The collaboration includes Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The supercomputers will support research in fusion energy, nuclear weapons, and cancer modeling, with AMD and partners sharing costs and output.
