Bill Gates has lost $40 billion in net worth in 2025, dropping to 15th on the Bloomberg Billionaire Index. Steve Ballmer, former Microsoft CEO, retains most of his shares and has a net worth of $178 billion, ranking 8th. Gates’s losses are due to selling Microsoft stock and donations to his foundation.
Gates’s net worth has also been affected by the $17 billion he put into the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2005, along with a $76 billion loss in his divorce. His largest public company investment is in Berkshire Hathaway, which has struggled this year.
In addition to Microsoft and Berkshire Hathaway, Gates has investments in private companies like TerraPower and owns 270,000 acres of land in the US. His umbrella company, Cascade Investments, holds other private investments. Bloomberg’s wealth calculation reset in July due to his pledge to donate most of his net worth.
Formerly the world’s richest man, Gates held the title for 18 of 24 years between 1995 and 2017. The future of Microsoft stock and Gates’s investments will continue to be monitored closely in the coming years.
