Google has enabled Pixel 10 phones to send and receive files directly with Apple devices using AirDrop, without Apple’s involvement. This new feature breaks down barriers between Android and iOS users, allowing for easy sharing between Pixel and Apple devices.
For this feature to work, Apple users must set their device to be discoverable to ‘Everyone’ for up to 10 minutes. Pixel owners can then share files using Google’s Quick Share feature, and AirDrop will prompt the transfer request. The feature also allows Apple users to AirDrop files to a Pixel 10.
The connection between devices is direct and peer-to-peer, ensuring no servers are involved and Google cannot access the shared content. Google’s security teams have verified this feature, which has also been independently tested by cybersecurity firm NetSPI.
Although Apple was not involved in this update, Google is open to future cooperation. This advancement marks a significant step towards facilitating communication between the Android and iOS ecosystems.
