Harvard University has significantly increased its holdings in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust by almost 260%, with a total worth of $442.8 million, owning 6.81 million shares as of September 30. The university made its initial $116.7 million investment in the Bitcoin ETF in the second quarter of FY2025, surpassing its investments in tech giants like Meta, NVIDIA, and Google. Other Ivy League universities, like Brown, have also invested in Bitcoin ETF shares.
In addition to Bitcoin, Harvard’s financial managers have purchased 661,391 shares in the gold ETF SPDR Gold Shares, valued at $235 million. The university’s portfolio primarily consists of tech stocks, including Microsoft, Taiwan Semiconductor, and Broadcom, as well as stocks in gambling companies like Light & Wonder and Flutter Entertainment. Pension funds in the US have started investing in Bitcoin ETF shares, although some have recently sold off their holdings.
Wisconsin’s Investment Board recently sold its $300 million holdings in the BlackRock Bitcoin ETF, while other investors have also liquidated their positions. CryptoQuant analyst Maartunn reported a $2.3 billion drop in Bitcoin ETF flows on November 8, indicating a recent decrease in investments in the ETF.
