Doosan Bobcat’s North American unit has filed patent infringement lawsuits against Caterpillar and dealer Holt Texas, alleging that Caterpillar’s equipment infringes on patents related to machine control and manoeuvrability. Legal representation is provided by Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan and The Dacus Firm. Bobcat is seeking monetary damages and a trade commission order to block imports of infringing equipment.
Bobcat, founded in 1947 and acquired by Doosan in 2007, is known for its compact equipment manufacturing. The company attributes industry adoption of small-format machines to its early developments. Its product range includes machinery used in construction, landscaping, forestry, and agriculture.
A lawsuit filed in Texas involves five patents related to equipment technology, particularly the skid-steer loader. Bobcat claims that Caterpillar began manufacturing skid-steer loaders 40 years after Bobcat, alleging that Caterpillar emulated Bobcat’s innovations instead of innovating itself.
Bobcat has also lodged complaints against Caterpillar in a German district court and at the EU’s Unified Patent Court. The legal actions aim to protect patented technologies, defend fair competition, and safeguard the company’s innovation and craftsmanship. Bobcat is committed to upholding its intellectual property rights and ensuring fair competition in the market.
